Welcome to Self Ordered Testing
The following Q&A will
familiarize you with the process of “self testing:"
-
What tests can I order on myself? With the exception of HIV, you
may order any diagnostic test on yourself without a doctor’s order. You must
be at least 18 years of age, and the test must be performed at a Virginia
based laboratory. In order to find out more about specific tests, please
visit
www.labtestsonline.org.
-
How do I get my test done? Our professional staff in any of our
seven patient centers will be able to assist you with your requests. We
accept walk-ins, with no appointments necessary. Please refer to our Center
Locations for maps and directions to our sites.
-
How much will my test cost? Our patient centers staff will be able
to give you specific price quotes on any test before the sample is collected.
-
How will I be notified about my result? In order to maintain
patient’s privacy, results will only be release to the patient in person, or
via mail.
-
Will my insurance pay for self ordered tests? No, insurance
companies will not usually cover charges on self-ordered tests. Payment will
be required at the time of service in cash, check or charge.
-
How do I interpret my results? Your test results will print on
individual reports, and results outside normal limits will be indicated as
such. For example, “H” for high value, or “L” for low value.
Since factors other than medical conditions can cause results to fluctuate
outside the normal range, you should always consult with your physician if
such situation arises. FML requires that all patients sign a
disclaimer on release of liability for interpretation before the test is
performed.
